Team

Here is the final team for studio-gameOn! Watch their progress over on our youtube channel and flickr stream, follow their innermost thoughts on the process on the studio game development blogs and do pass by the forums to feed them suggestions and inspirations! You can even watch them at work via our webcam.

Studio gameOn - studio manager

Sheryl Hills: Sheryl has already proven herself under fire in projects like these. Now she has to ensure the smooth running of a very public project and a whole new team!

Lead Game Producer

Rory Cartwright: A tall modest genius, Rory’s skills meant he was press-ganged into this role!

PROGRAMMERS

Colin Fraser: My desire to create computer games began almost as early as I started playing them. While my interest and personal experience covers many aspects of game development, I believe programming is the essential heart of games production. Programming is the primary focus of my studies, and my involvement in Studio Game-On. Most people are convinced that they can design their own great games, but only programmers really have the freedom to bring them to life!

Josh Taylor: I’ve been playing computer games since I was about 5 years old. The first console that I had was a colecovision. The first computer I owned was a Commodore 64 which I got to create some very basic music applications on. My favorite genres of games are First Person Shooters and Strategy games such as Starcraft and Command and COnquer. I also enjoy playing casual games as they are fun and don’t require much brain power (most of the time). I enjoy programming as I get to create a program and see it come to life. Recent games that I have created are Yatzhee and Mastermind. My favorite program languages would have to be C/C++ and C#.

Christina Tan: My name is Christina Tan, the studio gameOn project will be my final unit towards the completion of Master of IT degree. By the industry panel, I have been allocated a position across the areas of programming and web development and maintenance. From the 6 weeks project, I hope to be enlightened in the game development process and to understand the story behind a video game production. My experience in programming include the Software Engineering project with Associate Professor Joaquin Sitte implementing a control interface for Khepera robot soccer, Casual data analyst with Best Quotes Australia (now Moody’s Credit Quotes), an American based financial data company; and a one year placement with QUT within Corporate Systems and Network Applications team.

AUDIO / PROGRAMMING

Alex Anguix: A final year BIT (Games Development & Technology)/BCI(Sound Design) student, Alex has experience as a theatrical production assistant, coaches singers in microphone and recording techniques part-time, is Lead Sound Designer and Audio Programmer for the game Blood Frontier, develops innovative audio software in his spare time, is currently producing an EP (The Blackshoe Project) and is one of the producers of Bitter Slience, a dance music outfit.

Pixel: Greetings and salutations fellow travelers. Please allow me to introduce myself. Those that consider me friend address me as Pixel, but you good sir if I may be so bold can call me Steven. I am but a poor humble explorer who is currently studying the art of Game Design at Q.U.T. I stumbled on this secret project in the jungles of Peru and they haven’t let me go since. But all is well; the food is good if a little dubious.

ART TEAM

Toby Hewitt: Toby loves to draw. Often, vital information is lost amongst the incessant doodling and scribbles that spread across any bits of paper within his reach. As an artist he has found unparalleled access to ideas and inspiration through sci-fi movies, games and comic books. He can often be heard making the noises that would accompany whatever is going on under his pencil lead. RRReeeeeeooooOOORRR pew pew pew AIIIIIIIIIEEE… Toby believes that getting old is mandatory but growing up is optional.

Clyde Smets: Hello, my name is Clyde and I am a student at QUT. Ever since the day I saw “Halo 2 the Making of” DVD and realised that making videos game is an actual job, I had the passion and drive that one day I will work for a company on a AAA title game.

James Bowman: Originally aiming for a career in engineering and design, I became a draftsman after graduating from high school, while studying civil engineering at Southbank TAFE. I found the industry too dry and unimaginative, so I decided to get into the new games course at QUT.
I’m still a student at QUT, two years into a bachelor of games and interactive entertainment, and here I am as a part of the studio – game on team. The potential of Games as a creative medium still hasn’t been realized, and I’m excited at the prospect of being someone at the forefront of these developments.

Liam Alkamraikhi: Known to talk a lot but saying nothing, Liam Alkamraikhi is a self confessed pop culture junkie. When he is not getting his latest fix you can find him playing Hyper Bishi Bashi Championship and eating mad chinese. Food that is. http://zng.deviantart.com/

Abbey Miranda: I am a self-taught traditional artist who spent majority of my time sketching funny caricatures of my classmates during science and math classes at school. Always got a mouth-full from my teachers, but that never stopped me and am still going strong! Not very new to the game dev scene, I’ve worked on a couple of casual 2D games in the past, 2 for GameOn’s very own 48 hour challenge.

DESIGN / QA / WRITING

Alex Baldwin: I’m a 3rd year student in the games degree at QUT, majoring in Game Design and with Animation and Digital Media minors. I’m extremely passionate about game design, and enjoy making maps and mods in my spare time

Ian Calligeros: Self Pro-claimed Pro Gamer. I am very passionate and enthusiastic about games hence my excitement to be part of this studio

Gemma SInclair: Born with a passion for writing novels and with a cheerful, bubbly personality, I’m a Game Design major and Marketing minor with a fierce love for RPG games and dedicated to showing everyone (old or young) that gaming isn’t a closed industry and that anyone can enjoy a good game!

What is a small game development team made of?

Admin - planning - organisation - community

  • Project manager
  • On-site community liaison
  • Network - website - IT support

The project manager role in our studio combines Human Resource management, time lines, schedule and organisational responsibilities - our project manager will deserve to have their name on the game cover!

The on-site community manager will be in charge of the SLQ end of operations, helping members of the public find out about the studio project, explaining the project and encouraging them to input ideas!

Design

  • Lead designer
  • Concept artist
  • Writer

We are only running a very small studio and so these important roles will almost certainly have to be filled by talented folk who can move on from the early design stages into production stages. In the first instance these roles will be critical to giving the game its shape and mood. Preference will be given to applicants for the concept artist / writing / design roles who can also demonstrate skills and abilities in the production roles below:

Production

  • Producer / lead designer
  • Level editor
  • 3D modellers
  • Animators
  • Audio – music lead

AND the alchemy behind it all - PROGRAMMERS … you can never have too many programmers …

The team profile proposed here is pretty generic - obviously the actual game requirements will depend a great deal on who applies and what skills they bring … oh, and what on earth the game will actually be!!
